March Newsletter 2018
Hi Everyone, We hope everyone had a wonderful February vacation! Our preschoolers have been settling back into the classroom routine. They loved acting out the Three Little Pigs, retelling Goldilocks and The Three Bears and going on a 'Gummi' Bear Hunt! After a fun kid's choice week we are excited to begin an author study for the first three weeks in March. The author we will be following is Doreen Cronin. She writes the books Click, Clack Moo Cows that Type, Click, Clack, Quackity-Quack and Giggle, Giggle, Quack. Next week, we will focus on the book Click, Clack Moo Cows that Type. We will be practicing writing letters to our teachers with the sentence frames "We don't want ______. We want ______." just like in the book. We will be practicing our rhyming words and meeting the hard 'C' puppet and the soft 'C' puppet! Check out some curriculum highlights below. We can't believe it's already February! The kids have had such a blast wrapping up our penguin unit. Tacky is definitely a fan favorite in the classroom! This week we learned how penguins' feathers have special coating much like wax on them that keep them waterproof. Our preschoolers used some great describing words to compare Tacky to a 'real life' penguin. Some friends noticed that real penguins are graceful divers (unlike Tacky's cannonball), that both Tacky and real life penguins have webbed feet and that they both have blubber. We also introduced some addition with the number 5! We used goldfish and a cup to show how many ways we can make the number five. We noticed friends had 3 goldfish on top of the cup and 2 underneath, 1 on top and 4 underneath and all 5 on top and 0 underneath! The kids were amazed at themselves for doing some simple addition
Next week, we will be switching to a new set of animals - reptiles! We will be singing '5 Green and Speckled Frogs', learning about the life cycle of a reptile and introducing a new and very special member of the class! See the updates below for details. Check out some of our curriculum highlights below. Science Table: Microscope and slides Dramatic Play: Pet Store Art Table: Mosaic Chameleon like A Color of His Own Water Table: Pond Scene Books we will read: A Color of His Own by Leo Lionni The Mixed up Chameleon by Eric Carle It's Mine! January 2018
Hi Everyone, We are starting the year off with an 'out of this world' theme! Our Preschoolers have been loving all of the outer space activities and materials. During our short week last week, the children shared all of the things they knew about outer space and asked some questions like "How far is Earth from the sun?" (93 million miles away!) and "How do astronauts know where they're going in Space?" They did a great job passing the astronaut training course and fitness test. We also met Silly Sally the Sea Star who gave everyone a Star or Sun Stamp! We got to eat some space food (pudding) from a plastic bag and straw. If we had the chance to fly a rocket to the moon, most of our Preschoolers would be on board. Only a few wouldn't want to go because of the long trip away from home. We also learned about all of the different sizes of the planets and the distance from the sun. We found out Jupiter is the biggest planet and Neptune is the farthest from the sun. Next week we will be wrapping up our space unit. One of our high schoolers will be teaching us 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' in sign language. We will also be experimenting with different kinds of rockets, one made out of cups and elastics and one used with Alka-Seltzer tablets. Check out some curriculum highlights below. Literacy: Writing/Creating space stories using different space manipulatives Playdough Table: Galaxy Playdough Sand Table: Making moon rocks with salt dough Easel: Spray bottle galaxy painting Important Updates & Dates for January:
